Question from Tia: ” “I am a beginning photographer and ready to take the plunge in purchasing REAL backdrops! I need something that will carry well from site to site and will not wrinkle easily. I am overwhelmed by the market and need some guidance! Please help!”

Amie: I bought a really nice set from ebay for $150 it came with 3 lights 3 backdrops and stand(stand is totally portable and comes with a carring case.

Andrea: Oh I need to hear these answers too…

Hollie;  choose fabric backdrops instead of paper, if you are traveling. They hold up much better, and can be washed. B&H Photo Video offers a lot of great choices. I’d recommend a blue, black, and a white to start with. If you want to get a little creative, feel free to buy one with a design, otherwise the standard colors will offer more versatility if you’re on a budget.

Denise: Annie, can you tell me the name of the company? Hollie, I like the ‘denim’ pattern because it is so versatile and I agree. Muslin is the ideal fabric, paper creases, tears etc

Janel: Silver lake has wrinkle free & they Velcro to your stand to switch quickly. Some of the designs are cheesy, but they work great!

Jenna: I don’t use backdrops, but if I did, I would totally buy from drop it MODERN. They have some really neat designs!

Janel: http://www.silverlakephoto.com/

Rebecca:  Just an FYI- muslin/fabric backdrops will wrinkle. I had all kind of troubles with mine when I had them.

Kristin:  Silverlake color smacks are my dream backdrops. They are beautiful and are made of a wrinkle free material. They come in a couple of sizes and they have a speed rack hanging system that’s pretty handy too. They are my favorite and would definitely recommend them.

Nadja: Before taking that plunge yo might want check out some fabric stores clearance section. That’s what I do before spending on those backdrops that can be costly.

Amie: I just looked up Studio equipment on ebay

Katie: I agree with Nadja! Most of my backdrops are upholstering fabric. If you go for the thicker ones they don’t wrinkle at all!

Jason: Freedom Cloth backdrops never wrinkle!! Expensive but you can literally pull them out of a bag, throw them up and shoot. Muslin you have to steam out the wrinkles.

Tia: I’ve been using sheets. I have a black and a summer green. However, I’m spending a lot of time editing wrinkles out. Wanting something that is a bit easier to care for and will help cut down editing time.

Leslie: I love Swanky Prints on Etsy perfect for travel and amazing prices. vinyl they roll up, clean easy, and store perfect!

Michelle: I have gotten a few from backdrop outlet pretty reasonable.

Rob: @tia…when I had that problem, I used to light the backdrop itself quite strongly, makes the edit part easier

Tia: Thanks millions everyone!! Love all the feedback! :

Belinda: vinyl backdrops all the way. Material (unless its the crinkle free kind) is just a pain unless you have a portable steamer. Seamless paper is pretty good for one spot jobs (ie a studio) 🙂
