Question from Sherrie: ” I have an external flash with a gary fong lightsphere and everytime i try to use it i white out the picture. Do i need to change the setting on the flash or the camera.”

Christy: What mode are you shooting? P, Av, Tv, M?

Denise: Hi Sherrie, there are softbox covers that you can use, or tilt the flash upwards or bounce it off of a surface rather than right at the subject

Jenn:  Do you have your flash set TTL? If so, adjust your camera settings. If not…set it TTL (and in camera, too) then adjust your camera accordingly 🙂

Lindsay: Make sure your ISO is at 200 and your shutter speed is at 60 on your camera. Make sure your flash is TTL and things should work better for you. 😉

Crystal:  I have the same setup…and usually when this happens is because the external flash is set to M (manual) at full power. Try putting it on TTL (as stated above).

Bridget: Work in manual until you get an understanding of how it all works. ISO, aperture, and flash output combined determine exposure with flash. Adjusting your shutter speed will control the amount of ambient light that also adds to the exposure. Grab your camera and flash and play around with those settings to get the look you want! In a pinch, when you don’t have time to fiddle with it and miss the shot, shoot in TTL as already recommended, but do take the time to really understand it, it will pay off in the future!

Dave: Keep in mind that the diffuser was made to be used with the flash pointed straight up, not at your subject. This gives indirect light which should be lower than the unfiltered flash. Control your exposure just like any other flash picture. Try watching the YouTube videos Gary Fong has linked from his website showing how to use them.

Melanie: Yeah Bridget! Well said
