Tips for Capturing Authentic Moments

  •  Make sure your clients are comfortable.  This could be photographing them in a spot that’s “theirs” like their home or somewhere they  frequent, but also when suggesting a pose, make sure they look and feel comfortable.  If they aren’t, it will show in their photos.
  •  Incorporate as much of them as you can to make it personal.  If it’s an engagement session, where was their first date?  Do they like doing an activity like riding bikes or do they have a dog?  If so, incorporate that.  Or if it’s a newborn session in their home, use their swaddles and their things, rather than bring your own.
  • Educate your clients.  Make sure they know what clothing photographs well and what time of day the lighting is best.
  • Look for inspiration in not so obvious ways.  When I feel stumped on new and fresh poses, I look at old family photos, because I feel like a lot of times, that’s the feel I want to achieve in my sessions.  You could also head to the store and check out the latest issue of your favorite magazine or catalog to see different poses or how things are styled.
  • Most importantly, have fun!  If you aren’t having fun, more than likely your clients aren’t either.  It’s ok to break the professional character so to say and just be yourself.  Joking about yourself or life makes the tone lighter and helps make everyone feel more comfortable.
  • Stay true to yourself and your style.  With so many photographers out there now, your clients are hiring you for you.  Try not to fall into editing or posing trends and stay true to what feels right for you.  Your clients will appreciate you for it.
As a lifestyle photographer, the inspiration behind my work is authenticity. Authentic, real, emotions and moments. Something that can’t be replicated.
