Tips on Pet Photography

My passion for pet photography started at the moment we got our Rhodesian ridgeback puppy named Eyla. Our little puppy was growing so fast and changing so quick – that I wanted to save all of those passing moments. I am fascinated more and more by the kindness, the loyalty, and the honest love that pets give us. For me, the challenge is to capture this in pictures. Eyla still is my favorite model.

I mostly photograph outdoor dog sessions. Nature provides so many beautiful locations and a location can give such different impressions during the changing seasons. I love soft light and pictures with depth. However, the most important for me is to show the soul of a dog in my pictures. I want the owner to think “oh yes, that is just how my dog is, that’s our boy/girl” when they look at my pictures.

To achieve this, I talk with the owner about the habits of the dog, I observe the dog during the walk to our shooting location. I look for a location that supports the character of the dog. During the session, I try to be as flexible as possible and use every unexpected, short moment where the dog shows its way of being. If I am lucky, the dog is well trained – he will sit, stay, and lay down on my command. But it is all about how he sits to touch the heart of his human with the picture.

Emma is a happy French bulldog.  So, I picked a flower location.  I got great shots of her looking at me, but the moment she chased a fly and put her nose in the air – she showed her heartwarming cute way of enjoying life.

Sam is a dog that loves to walk long tracks. He always walks ahead a bit and looks back while waiting for his mistress to come closer. The way he stands there, patient in the middle of beautiful nature is how his mistress always sees him.

Eyla is a control freak. She is always checking out the surrounding. I love the way she makes herself taller to see as much as possible.

I also love doing sessions of dogs with their humans. I try to capture their relationship and the joy they bring each other.
