Marketing Yourself As a Newborn Photographer

Just like many businesses, it’s important to find a niche within your field and stick with it. By doing this, you avoid that “Jane of all trades, master of none” scenario and become even more desirable in your particular market.

Some people enjoy doing family sessions, others love the thrill of senior photo shoots and others yet find nothing more wonderful than newborn photography. If you’re in the latter most category, you’ve happened upon the right BP4U Guides blog entry!

The first step to marketing yourself as a newborn photographer is to have experience, of course. Once you’ve got that under your belt, it’s time to spread the word regarding the various services you offer. After all, who’s going to book you if they don’t even know you exist?

Idea #1: Work Together With Others
Work with others in maternity and newborn fields. For example, you can approach local businesses who specialize in newborn decor or clothing and see if you can work out a word-of-mouth trade. Basically: If they recommend you, you’ll recommend them. You can also do this with doulas and midwives, local lamaze or pregnancy yoga clinics, etc.

Idea #2: Spread The Word
Plaster your name all over town and the web. Create an e-marketing campaign via the various social networks available (Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter and even YouTube). Make sure to showcase your work and spell out what it is you do “word for word.” Do this in places where expectant mothers and fathers are likely to frequent, such as the library/book store (sneak your business card in pregnancy or baby name books) or fertility and family planning clinics.

Idea #3: Show That You’re Professional
There are lots of newborn photographers out there. Your goal is to make yourself rise to the top amidst them all! A great way to showcase your professionalism is to respond promptly to all emails/phone calls/correspondence. Don’t be afraid to infuse a little personality, but also keep things business appropriate as you get to know your potential client. BP4U’s Newborn Welcome Packet is one of the easiest and best ways you demonstrate your organization, interpersonal and photography skills. It’s great because it’s 100% customizable and was designed specifically with mothers and mothers-to-be in mind!
