Question from Morgan: “I had mini sessions- in these sessions 10 digital downloads were promised. However, I find that in most cases I have way more than 10 images that I love and that I think the family will love. I am thinking about editing all of my choices and putting them into a gallery. Then allowing the clients to pick their favorite ten for downloads and to purchase the others that are included in their gallery for a specific fee. What do you think I should do?”

Shanyn: That is exactly what I do lol

Robin: That is a great idea

Stephanie: Sounds like a plan!

Brianne:  Do the gallery thing

Emma:  Yep, me too. In fact it is what I do. X number of images are offered with their session and the rest are available for purchase if they’d like.

David: Get paid for what you do. This isn’t a hobby.

Kimberly: As a client of a prof photographer, I looooove your idea. I never can just buy “10” anyways:) I like to have the choice behind which photos I like best and the option to buy more than just “10.”

Ryley: why not make a little more money from them Charge per digital download… they might buy all of themm.

Marci:  I think you are on the right track…and I’m the same way, I always end up giving the client more than what was promised (which is good buuuut I should make $$ from it-duh! Why didn’t I think of the gallery thing sooner?!

Shanyn: I only offer 3 – usually they buy most of them!

Alysha: I do that with all my minis. They can order just the 10 included in the fee or can buy more for $10 per image. I do a basic edit on all the ones I love then a full edit on whatever they order, that way I’m not “wasting time” on images they aren’t going to want.

Morgan:  Great. And in your opinion what should be charged per extra download?

Jennifer: What online galleries does everyone use?

Trish: This is a great idea! Any recommendations out there on gallery resources? Do you suggest using a 3rd party gallery or do you offer it directly on your website?

Glenna: A few online gallery suggestions please. Love this idea!

Karen: I often have the same problem. I usually can’t decide so I’ll let the client have the choice.

Marci: Trish-I just signed up for shootproof.com the other day and you can have up to 100 images uploaded for FREE

Zoe: That’s what I do and I charge $20 per extra image

Jessica: Or you can come up with a price that you feel comfortable with and let all the images go on another cd.

Amanda:  I disagree. It would feel a little like a bait and switch tactic to me. I am alwaus iffy about stuff like that though. It reminds me of those little ‘enter to win a free 8×10’ boxes they used to put out in places, in which everyone won an 8×10, but of course it was to get you in the door so you would spend more. A lot of people do this and I not saying it is bad business practice but I know that I would not personally be comfortable with it

Sarah: I give 10 photographer picks to my customers and then I give them previews of the other photos, it works very well for me.

Morgan: Jennifer, I use Shoot Proof. The have free options and paid options it is a great system!! It is not a bait and switch tactic at all. I feel it is unfair to limit them to 10 pictures. If I were to just throw out 3 or 4 great images- I would feel like I was cheating them! I want them to have the option! Hope that makes sense!

Sarah:  I like giving the choice to the customer. What I like might not be what they like.

Robert:  Unless my mini session prices were on the upper end I would give them the ten I like and let them see the others in a gallery or proof book and buy at regular price.

Emma: I agree that often your favorite photo might not be someone else’s so giving people extra images to choose from is a good plan, and a bonus if they want to buy extra!

Lindsey: following, thinking about doing proofing online but who’s the best to go through without a website

Carolyn:  I use ShootProof too. It’s very easy to get your acct set up and you have the option to enable digital downloads at the price you set. You do not need a website to use them and they offer a free plan as well (for accts uploading up to 100 images). 😀
