Tips for Posing Senior Boys

You know who’s most likely to dread having their photograph taken? Answer: high school boys. Okay, so that’s not always the case, but there’s a certain difficulty to making a high school boy smile and pose for the camera. That’s not to say you can’t bring out his handsome features and make him feel at ease through the process! Check out a few tips from Kimberly Reid that’ll help you in your next senior boy portrait session.

Leaning Poses

Why lean? Because it helps make the senior boy look — and feel — relaxed and comfortable. Stick straight posture may work in some instances, but chances are you’ll get a much more natural shot when he can assume his normal, casual posture.

One of Kimberly Reids’ biggest piece of advice is to really use your surroundings.

She says to look around at your photo location and think about what areas would be good to lean against. For example, she used a window ledge for the picture on the left and the side of an old bridge for the photo on the right.

Your senior boy doesn’t always have to lean against something. For example, have him sit down — the ground, stairs or props all work — and lean forward. He can have his hands clasps in between his knees or elbows on either leg and head resting on his hands.
