Tips on Lifestyle Photography

Lifestyle sessions are so much fun and I have a wonderful time capturing those memories for the family. Whether you are in their home or on location,  these images are the ones that make my heart beat fast. The lifestyle images are ultimately what I do.

Have a plan. Especially when photographing them in their home.  I always tell my clients to not plan for something that they don’t typically do, if that makes sense. I tell them to do what they always do, and I ask them what they enjoy doing and then I go from there and give them prepping instructions.  Nikon D700, 35 1.4 ISO250, SS:1/2000 Kelvin WB

I find  it is best to use a wide angle lens when you are going into the client’s home. I use my 35 and my 24, depending on what look I am going for and what I am photographing. Using a wide lens like that, I am able to capture the whole scene, and the whole story. Nikon D700, 35 1.4 at 2.2, ISO250, SS:160

Crank that ISO. For indoor lifestyle sessions, you really need a camera that can handle high ISO. You never know what the lighting conditions will be that day. It could be a stormy, cloudy day like it was in the photo above. In that case, being able to crank that ISO is imperative. Nikon D700 35 1.4, SS:320, ISO2500

Don’t forget the details. Those details make the story you are capturing complete! Nikon D700 35 1.4 @2.2, ISO250, SS:400

Tell the story from different angles/perspectives. You can really have some fun at lifestyle sessions and get super creative. That is what I love the most about them. As an artist, it’s freeing to be able to express myself through my work. This is your time to step back and watch and learn about the people in front you. Take lots of different shots from different angles. Nikon D700 35 1.4, IDO250, SS400

me Jamie Faulkner Photography is a family and child photographer located in Southern IL and serves the Southern IL and Western KY area. Capturing the everyday moments is her passion and she has a very natural and candid style to her work. When she is not photographing her clients, you can find her chasing down her two girls, experimenting with film photography, hitting up way to many antique stores, drinking way to much coffee, chasing that light and constantly learning about it, and coming up with adventures and travels to persuade the husband to go on. And you can bet she documents it all.
