Tips for In-Camera Double Exposures

What I really like about this photo is how the two flowers sort of represent their souls. This couple is very spiritual and I like how the shot somehow shows just that. I also like the texture on the sky which was made because of the dry grass.

For this shot, I took the silhouette photo of the bridal couple first. For the second shot, I saw this windmill and tried using it for a double exposure. Thanks to the canon 5d Markiii and its live view capabilities for the double exposure option, I was able to place the couple’s faces just so – to be framed by the windmill. I used the ‘additive’ option for this shot.

Again using live view on my camera, I manage to find two wild flowers on the side of a road that fit perfectly for this shot! I love the colors of nature and this has to be a favorite of mine.

This time I used a beautiful leaf that I saw at the beach. The sun was shining right behind it and I knew it would give the perfect shine for this photo. Again using the additive option of the Mark iii I was able to create a funky and fun photo.

I often like to mix textures and shapes into double exposures. This photo was taken at a wedding and later on I used it to practice double exposures at a local park. I saw this beautiful tree with lots of leaves, so I shot straight underneath it and this was the result!

This shot is of a very fun couple on their wedding day, mixed with two different types of trees that grew next to each other. This time I used the ‘dark’ option for the double exposure and I really like the result!

I played around with similar shots to create a somehow confusing image, but I think it works! Especially having a young girl as a model, makes it fun and youthful.

I don’t often like to work when the sun is too bright in the middle of the day, but for this specific swimwear photoshoot I believe it worked. I love the feel of summer and the expressions of the model mixed with a double exposure.

Steff__004 Hi, I’m Steff. I’m a wedding and portrait photographer. I was born in a beautiful, small town in México called Chapala. I studied communication sciences at ITESO in Guadalajara. One of my favorite subjects was photography. I just loved being in the dark room! Since I was little my father taught me how to use his camera and I was hooked. After I finished my degree, I moved to New York and took a few workshops at the School of Visual Arts. While living in New York, I met my now hubby who’s from South Africa. We’re currently settled in East London, South Africa. I travel at least once a year to México, making my business grow in both countries. I have gipsy feet and can’t stay still in one place! I love traveling. I feel so lucky to be able to photograph people and weddings in different countries. I wouldn’t know how to precisely describe my photographic style. I love simplicity. I enjoy capturing true emotions and editing the photos in such a way that they resemble the unique feel of film. I love silhouettes, front bokeh, and lately I’m really enjoying centering my subjects right in the middle of the frame!
