For this shot I told my clients to just be themselves and pretend that I wasn’t there. This involved having them walk toward me and talk, look at each other, and even laugh. Thus, creating an image that had a natural feel to it. Never be afraid to have your subject surrounded by your environment. It makes for an image that is not only focused on your beautiful mama-to-be, but the beautiful sights around them as well. Always make sure mama-to-be is warm if the temperatures outside are low. For this session I always made sure that in the down time someone was there with a jacket to give to mom to warm her up in between images. Shoot through leaves and trees. They create a great foreground for an image and also help shape your subject as well. You don’t have to have all smiles during the session, sometimes fierce expressions plus eye contact from your mama-to-be can be so stunning. Details are everything during a maternity session, getting photos of just the belly is a must! Utilize the natural props around you. Trees are great to frame your subject. Stumps that are safe to stand on work great to make your subject taller.
